Retired pastor and missionary Robert Earl Wakefield of Hartville died July 10 at the age of 81.
He was born in Hartville on June 18, 1927, the son of Earl and Alma Wakefield. On Jul7 17, 1948, he married Margarita Jocelyn Adkison, who survives.
Wakefield grew up in First Baptist Church, Hartville, and later was a pastor in Pattonsburg, Wyaconda, Luray, Mountain View and at Green Valley Baptist Church in Hartville.
While he and his wife were missionaries, he served as pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Singapore and of Klang Baptist Church in Malaysia and in various other roles. They also served in other nations, including Thailand, India and Fiji.
He also served as a Hospice chaplain and a counselor.
He enjoyed photography and was an avid creative writer. He liked woodworking and made items for Mountain Rockers in Silver Dollar City, where he worked part-time for a few years with his daughter.
Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Alan Beisswenger, Branson; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Fran, Chiangmai, Thailand; three grandsons and their spouses, James and Elaine Spencer of Springfield, Luke and Becca Wakefield, Mill Valley, Calif., and Ben and Britta Wakefield, Springfield; two granddaughters and their spouses, Anita and Jerrod Watson, Brownsville, Texas, and Torri and Gerry Davis, Branson; two great grandchildren, Jocelyn Watson, Brownsville, Texas, and Zachariah Davis, Branson; three brothers and their wives, Don and Juanita Wakefield, Rogersville, Bill and Delcie Wakefield, Louisburg, N.C., and Dick and Mary Wakefield, Hartville; an uncle, Lee Wakefield; two aunts, Helen Wakefield and Betty Jean Nichols; and two sisters-in-law, Lois Reed Harris and Lois Fern Adkison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts and uncles, and two brothers-in-law.
Funeral services were held July 14 at First Baptist Church, Hartville, with Dick Wakefield, Mark Wakefield, and Bill Wakefield officiating.
Burial was in Steele Memorial Cemetery, Hartville.
Wakefield attended Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar; Union University in Jackson, Tenn.; and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Southwest Baptist University presented him with an honorary doctorate in 1994.
His family has requested that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Community Hospice or the International Mission Board.
