Hartsfield, others call for healthcare for children, families

Religious leaders from across the state are recruiting volunteers to go to Jefferson City April 16 in support of family-friendly healthcare bills.

Wallace S. Hartsfield Sr., retired pastor of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, urged attendees at the Baptist Border Crossing event in Liberty last week to put feet to their concern for justice issues.

Clergy and denominational leaders will participate in a roundtable discussion on the future of healthcare in Missouri at 10:30 a.m.

Attendees are urged to visit with their legislators at noon and express their concerns for legislation affecting low-income families.

The event will conclude with a “Faith and Families Public Rally” that organizers hope will include Gov. Jay Nixon, as well as federal and state legislators.

Hartsfield said he is particularly concerned that the House has rejected the governor’s appeal for the income threshhold for Medicaid recipients to be raised from $3,000 to $6,000.

Organizers say the healthcare of 27,000 children and 35,000 low-income working parents is at stake.
