Writer Jonathan Merritt warns that recent decisions at the United Methodist Church’s special gathering in St. Louis last week could send the denomination down the same path as the Southern Baptist Convention after their “conservative resurgence” decades ago. The resulting religious homogeneity has left the SBC ill-equipped to face the challenges of today and a decade-long decline in membership and baptisms.
