The result of a meeting of representatives from Kansas City-area Baptist groups will be a Baptist Border Crossing April 2-4 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Liberty.
According to a press release, the event is to further efforts begun by the New Baptist Covenant meeting in Atlanta in early 2008. Initiated by former President Jimmy Carter, New Baptist Covent organizers encouraged regional groups to pursue similar efforts.
As a result of the June meeting, the Baptist Border Crossing Network was formed and a task force named to plan next spring’s gathering in Liberty.
Plenary speakers for the Baptist Border Crossing event include author Tony Campolo, Baptist World Alliance president David Coffey, North American Baptist Fellowship president David Goatley and evangelist Carolyn Ann Knight.
Carter will also participate in the event, which will feature breakout sessions led by facilitators from the various Baptist groups and will deal with issues such as poverty, peacemaking, religious liberty and diversity.
Planners have come from the National Baptist Convention USA, National Baptist Convention of America, Progressive National Baptist Convention, American Baptist Churches USA, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Southern Baptist Convention, Baptist General Convention of Missouri and General Baptist Convention.
