Journey to Bethlehem: December 9

When You Face Your Red Sea

Today's Scripture: Exodus 14:5-14

One of my all-time favorite movies is “October Sky,” based on the true story of Homer Hickam, a young man growing up in a West Virginia coal mining town in the 1950s. In those days, young men didn't have many options. If they didn't go to college on a football scholarship, they ended up working in the coal mines for the rest of their lives.

Homer wasn’t a football player. He loved science and had a passion for building rockets. He and some friends began conducting experiments, trying to build rockets that would fly. They dreamed of college scholarships as a ticket out of the coal mining life.

Homer's dream fell apart when his father was injured in a serious mining accident. Homer had no choice but to quit school and go to work to support his family. But after his father recovered, he had to make a decision: He could either remain a "captive" — journeying down a coal mine every day, or he could make another journey — to follow what he was called and gifted to do.

Homer made his choice. He quit the mines, went back to school and ended up as a scientist at NASA. There were times when things seemed hopeless, and he was tempted to "go back to Egypt." But, instead, he learned to look at life from another perspective.

Are you facing the Red Sea? Are there situations in your life that seem impossible? Remember, it only seems impossible to you. God will get you to the other side. You're not on your own. You don't have to fight the army alone and you don't have to conquer the sea in your own strength. You only have to reach for God's power.

The Red Sea you are facing is not the dead-end you think it is. You may be tempted to give up, or take the easy way out, or to settle for second best, but God has a better idea. He wants you to look at the big picture; he wants you to look at life from his perspective. He will get you through any impossible situation.
