Rev. Dr. C. Jeff Woods will serve as Acting General Secretary of American Baptist Churches USA while Lee Spitzer recovers from heart surgery at home.
Lee SpitzerOn Sept. 7, Spitzer underwent replacement of a congenitally defective aortic valve and triple bypass. He was releaseed from the hospital on Sept. 14 and is home, where he reports that he intends “to focus entirely on regaining my strength and health” as he undergoes physical therapy and doctors determine recovery time needed.
In a letter to staff on behalf of the Board of General Ministries Executive Committee, ABCUSA Board of General Ministries President Josué Gómez-Menéndez announced Woods’ call as acting secretary.
In encouraging continued prayer for Spitzer to “be with us again as soon as possible,” Gómez-Menéndez added ‘We especially include his family, whom we send our most supportive embrace at this hour. It is time to demonstrate our quality of teamwork, ‘so that the world can see that we are one.'”
Spitzer and his wife Lois are thankful for continued prayers for the family, along with the contacts, visits and prayers while he was in the hopital.
