William Jewell College planned Center for Sports and Fitness will be built near the campus entrance, adjacent to the existing Greene Stadium.

The Sunderland Foundation has provided a $5 million lead gift for construction of a new Center for Sports and Fitness at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. The $20 million facility will serve as a multi-use space for NCAA Division II athletics, student recreation and college and community events.

The Center for Sports and Fitness will be built near the campus entrance, adjacent to the existing Greene Stadium. A new press box and stadium bleachers are in store for the football and soccer stadium, while the two-story facility will include competition and practice courts for basketball and volleyball, performance gymnasium, locker rooms, fitness center, offices, event terrace, classrooms and concessions. The west entrance will align with the Pryor Learning Commons, the college’s collaborative learning center built in 2013.

“This facility is a vital investment in Jewell’s student-athlete experience and provides first-rate opportunities for fitness and recreation for all students,” said Elizabeth MacLeod Walls, William Jewell College president. “Its placement will mirror Pryor Learning Commons, the academic hub of campus, supporting our commitment to the development of both mind and body.”

Jewell’s current athletic facility and fieldhouse, the Mabee Center, will continue to serve Cardinal Athletics and the community for swimming, athletic training, practices and recreational use.

“This generous gift from the Sunderland Foundation is a tremendous investment in the future of our scholar athletes and the fitness and well-being of every student on our campus. It’s an exciting time for Cardinal Athletics at Jewell,” said Tom Eisenhauer, Jewell athletics director.
