Growing up, we discover the entertainment value of fish tales and whoppers. We hear a story that’s too good not to pass along, and we usually do.

So it’s not surprising that originality and accuracy may not be at the top of a congregation’s ethical concerns.

Technology is a major part of today's changing culture, even as people age. Pew Research reports that at the turn of the century, 14 percent of individuals 65 and older went online. Last year that number climbed to 59 percent, with 74 percent of those aged 65-69.

Classes and one-on-one tutoring, perhaps through the church library, can help those who want to learn. In addition to providing new skills, this can lead to intergenerational communication and socializing with others in the community.

What would this look like?

Many congregations are discussing or have discussed turning to e-newsletters as an alternative to the U.S. Postal Service. Before deciding, examine the pros, cons and options. Discuss what you want to communicate and how people like to receive information.

The summer break can lead to “summer church.” Vacations and other activities don’t have to mean lower expectations for attendance and involvement.

During the Civil War, the church I attend was occupied by Union soldiers who used the pews for firewood, and the building as a horse stable. Later, the church burned. While different, every church has a history. It can be seen in its architecture, wall portraits, and even in its minutes and bylaws. At some point, the congregation will need to share that history in an anniversary, a church directory or a community celebration. Share that history in ways that are both significant and fun.

Every month, every week and every day is a celebration of some sort — an awareness week or a monthly observance for foods, health issues, anniversaries or holidays.
